This subsection of the website contains information about the operation of mobile units and the vessel supporting them. The activities concerned with the marine aspects of the offshore oil industry are a long way from the traditional activities of merchant ships, which was, and still is the carriage of  cargoes around the world. Back in the early days there was a direct relationship between offshore vessels and tugs, and back in the early days in the Gulf of Mexico the industry actually used fishing vessels and former US Navy barges and landing craft.
