
By the early 1990s there was some incentive for the development of purpose built standby vessels, or as they were to be known ERRVs, due to the recommendations subsequent to the Piper Alpha disaster, and the almost universal criticism of the Silver Pit. As a result Amerada Hess, then operators of the Scott Field contracted with a shipowner to build and manage this vessel. Another, the trafalgar Guardian was built for Enterprise and operated by Tidewater. In their day they were an innovation.
