The VS480 AHTS was designed by VikSandvik at the turn of the new century and three were built one for Solstad and two for DOF. This design perhaps embodies everything that one could want for moving oil rigs, with 20,000 bhp giving a bollard pull of 240 tonnes, a decent sized deck area and good bulk carrying capacities. Perhaps its suitability for these general tasks is illustrated by the fact that one of them, the Norman Ivan has been on hire to Murphy Oil for its Malasia operations since 2004.
