A slightly grainy but historic photograph of the first offtake from the Foinaven Oilfield, in 1997 (according to the internet). If people thought the weather was against them in the North Sea, out in the Atlantic, the location of this field, they were to face conditions at a whole different level. In order to make crew changes the helicopters will wait at some friendly location on the Shetland islands hoping that at some point the windspeed will drop sufficiently to allow them to land. Once, when leaving a semi-submersible out there, I had to crawl across the helideck to get to the aircraft.
