Modern DP configurations have allowed the development of ships which can carry out limited well related operations, and capable of carrying these out is the Well Enhancer not a name which exactly trips off the tongue, but which effectively describes the task which the ship in intended to carry out. It has a modern drilling mast on the afterdeck and we can presume that it hovers over the well and stabs it with a drill string, carrying out the necessary improvement work. The job is only possible due to the fact that modern fields have completions on the seabed, connected by umbilicals to the mother platform, FPSO or other.
Photo taken on 24th April as the ship was on its way down the channel out of Aberdeen and posted here on 26th (The capstan visible in the foreground has been there for about 200 years, and up to about ten years ago could be turned by hand.
